KBS, SBS, and MBC claim they have had enough.

Three of South Korea’s biggest terrestrial broadcasters — the networks behind major weekly K-Pop music shows — have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT.

KBS, MBC, and SBS claim that ChatGPT used their news content without permission to train its AI system. They are seeking to stop the alleged copyright infringement and are also demanding damages.

KBS is the network behind “Music Bank.”

According to the Korea Broadcasters Association, the networks argue that their news reports are core company assets built over decades. They claim OpenAI used large amounts of this content without securing proper licensing agreements.

MBC is the network behind “Show! Music Core.”

The association also stated that OpenAI has signed paid licensing deals with several global media outlets for AI development. However, they allege that the company refused to negotiate with the three Korean broadcasters while continuing to benefit from news-based training data.

SBS is the network behind “Inkigayo.”

The use of AI in K-Pop has long been a controversial topic. Many management agencies have been slammed by fans for using AI-generated imagery in image and videos released by some of the most popular K-Pop groups.

With this latest development, it seems the relationship will remain strained.
