Stepping back into a darkened 1980s in Disney+’s period-noir Born Guilty (previously I Am a Sinner), we meet our back alley characters through Park Seo-joon (Surely Tomorrow), Uhm Tae-gu (Light Shop), and Jo Hye-joo (Dear Hyeri) in the first script reading stills.
Adapted from a popular webtoon created by webtoonist Lee Moo-ki, the drama remake sets up its story in a troubled Seoul, when the 1980s re-development boom tore up city streets and neighborhoods were left in a lawless disarray amid the chaos caused by construction.
Here enters the cunning and ambitious Park Eon-jin (Park Seo-joon) who is better known by his alias Paeng-yi, which means ‟spinning top” in Korean. Although he’s just a low-ranking maknae in the gang, Paeng-yi is quick to take advantage when a sudden opportunity comes his way. And this helps Paeng-yi push his way in with the big boys in the drug trafficking foray.
Paeng-yi then further cements his presence by allying himself with the fierce Ssaeng-dak (Uhm Tae-gu), whose name means ‟raw chicken” in English. But by agreeing to the partnership, Ssaeng-dak is betraying his own gang and thus, hell breaks loose between the different underbelly groups.
Rounding out our main trio, Bok-hee (Jo Hye-joo) joins the fold as a key player and supplier in the drug cartel at hand. The free-spirited Bok-hee has a shared history with Paeng-yi, having grown up in the same orphanage and is Paeng-yi’s first love as well.
Adding to the lineup, though not featured here, Kim Dong-wook (Seoul Busters) will reportedly be making a special guest appearance as the mob boss of another rival gang.
Production for the crime-action is currently in filming, with filmmaker and screenwriter Hong Won-chan (12.12: The Day, Deliver Us From Evil) at the helm.
