A Korean celebrity is drawing attention online after reports surfaced that he participated in a TV recording on the same day as his military discharge, sparking debate over whether the move violated military regulations.
Rapper MC Gree, the son of veteran broadcaster Kim Gu Ra, recently completed his service in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps. However, controversy arose after it was revealed that Gree took part in the recording of MBC’s Radio Star just four hours after being discharged.
Following the news, some netizens questioned whether his appearance constituted a violation of military law, citing regulations that prohibit active-duty soldiers from engaging in profit-making activities. Others argued that because Gree was still technically considered a soldier on his discharge day, his participation in a paid broadcast could be problematic.
In response, the Marine Corps quickly addressed the issue. A representative clarified that Gree’s broadcast appearance was conducted with official approval from his unit, in accordance with the Ministry of National Defense’s public relations guidelines.
According to the Marine Corps, Gree was fully aware that he was still considered active-duty at the time of filming and followed all proper procedures required for such an appearance. The military emphasized that his participation was not a personal decision, but one that had been formally approved in advance.
Despite the clarification, online reactions remain mixed. Some netizens expressed relief after hearing the official explanation, while others continued to debate whether celebrities should be allowed to appear on entertainment programs so close to their discharge date.
