Protesters Demand IU, Lee Dong Wook, And Yuri Pay For Their Coffee

There’s a reason these stars are being “targeted.”

IU, Lee Dong Wook, and Girls’ Generation’s Yuri are being flooded with demands from protesters asking them to pay for food and drinks.

The unusual situation comes amid protests over the ballot paper shortage controversy during South Korea’s June 3 local elections. On June 6, 2026 (KST), comments began appearing under IU’s recent Instagram posts, with netizens asking the singer to pre-pay for Starbucks orders in Jamsil, where protesters have been gathering. “Please pre-pay for Starbucks in Jamsil,” one comment read.

Another wrote, “Democracy has been destroyed. You know it would be contradictory not to pre-pay for people protesting the National Election Commission, right?” A third comment said, “People have gathered in Jamsil because of election fraud. Will you be pre-paying?”

    • “Hurry up and buy us coffee, water, and food!”
    • “I’m here protesting election fraud, and I’m thirsty.”
    • “Aren’t you going to pay for our Starbucks?”
    • “Treat us to Starbucks at Jamsil, please.”
    • “IU-nim, aren’t you going to pay for everyone’s coffee this time?”

The reason IU is being targeted is because of her past support for protesters during former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment protests in December 2024. At the time, IU prepaid for meals and drinks at nearby businesses for citizens attending the rallies.

Now, some protesters are arguing that she should do the same for those protesting the recent election controversy.

IU is not the only celebrity receiving such comments. Protesters have also gone to the social media accounts of other stars who previously pre-paid for citizens during the impeachment protests, including actor Lee Dong Wook and Girls’ Generation’s Yuri.

Under Lee Dong Wook’s posts, comments included, “The whole country is in chaos, so why aren’t you posting a thoughtful statement today?” and “Voting rights were restricted and taken away, so why aren’t you speaking up?”

    • “The whole country is in chaos, so why aren’t you posting a thoughtful statement today?”
    • “The people’s sovereignty was trampled on. Why aren’t you speaking up?”
    • “Please send Starbucks coffee to the election fraud rally.”
    • “Please upload a thoughtful statement. I’m curious about Lee Dong Wook’s opinion.”
    • “Are you pretending to be an enlightened citizen? The people’s right to political participation was violated, so why are you silent? Do you only get angry selectively?”
    • “Where did democracy go?? Is it selective democracy?”

Yuri’s Instagram was met with similar comments. One netizen wrote, “Unnie, can you pre-pay for coffee in Jamsil like you did during the impeachment rally?” Another asked, “Why are you just watching the Jamsil voting incident right now? Shouldn’t you at least support us with drinks or encouragement too? Why are you staying silent?”

The June 3 local elections were disrupted after a shortage of ballot papers left some citizens unable to vote. According to Korean reports, prepared ballots were quickly exhausted at several polling stations, including locations in Seoul’s Songpa, Gangnam, and Gwangjin districts, temporarily halting the voting process.

The National Election Commission later transported additional ballots and allowed voters who had already been waiting on-site to cast their ballots after the official closing time. In response to the incident, NEC Chairman Roh Tae Ak and Secretary General Heo Cheol Hoon both offered to resign. The controversy has since led to continued protests, with some demonstrators demanding a re-run of the election.
