With over 5,000 songs on my iPhone’s “K-Pop Singles” playlist, I thought it would be fun to add a bit of unpredictability to my song review posts. So as a result, we have the “Random Shuffle Review” feature.
The rules are simple. I fire up my playlist, press “shuffle,” and whatever song plays first gets the full Bias List treatment!
Year Released: 2013
Part of the fun of a random shuffle review is comparing the past to present. Trends come and go, and you can often predict a song’s era from its sound. As I’ve written more times than I can count on this blog, the era of capital “s” Singing seems to be out of trend, as more girl groups favor charismatic talking or gentle cooing. You don’t hear belt-it-out pop songs nearly as often as you used to.
Enter: Spica’s Tonight. This song certainly belongs in a different era, and it’s all the better for it. From start to finish, the group deliver powerful vocals, building energy before the song explodes during its chorus. If we were to picture Tonight as a straight line, that line would be tilted upwards, steadily climbing and gaining steam. This is a song structure I tend to love, as it never leaves room for boredom or disengagement. The music just keeps growing more and more effusive.
If I zoom out and imagine the wider pop landscape of 2013, Tonight is admittedly generic. It doesn’t feel very “K-pop” in the way other highlights from the year did. However, the song secures its longevity through its sturdiness. It doesn’t put a foot wrong, and it’s so fun to sing along to.
