Recently, it was reported that Lee and Girls’ Generation member YoonA were gearing up to begin filming the upcoming K-Drama, titled Unnatural. The series is based on the popular Japanese drama by the same name.

Netizens were immediately disgruntled by the news, given Lee Jin Wook’s past controversy. In 2016, the actor was accused of rape by a woman identified as Oh. The actor vehemently denied the allegations and sued her, but in 2017, a court found Oh’s accusations plausible, finding her not guilty of false allegations. After Lee appealed, in 2018, the Seoul Central District Court overturned the first trial’s ruling and indicted Oh on false sexual assault claims charged, sentencing her to eight months in prison with two years of probation.
Despite the legal verdict, this controversy continues to haunt Lee’s career to date. After the announcement of Unnatural casting, netizens have been raising issues with him being a part of a story that involves sensitive themes of sexual consent, victim blaming, and sexual assault awareness.
do you know how diabolical it is to star in a drama about sexual awareness when you got sa records….scrap the whole thing and free my princess bro https://t.co/knu8NVQSou

Some netizens also criticized YoonA for accepting a project with him, though fans defended her, arguing that she had no control over the casting decision and was probably signed before Lee was brought on board.
Unpopular opinion: After years in the industry, some actors and artists definitely have enough power to turn down projects their company offers them. The hard truth is, a lot of things people care deeply about here just don’t matter that much to celebrities 🙂 https://t.co/D9Dym0LiUv

Yoona this is not it. After a very successful drama, why do you need to partner up with a washed up r*pist- Management needs to wake up https://t.co/tTesGXwLVr

Trapping yoona in a contract first just to cast a problematic asshole later.. Pd & casting team, we see exactly what u did here.Stop using women as shields to whitewash trashy men! This is her 3rd project in a row dealing with male lead casting messes. Enough! She deserves better https://t.co/bsYxOAHUik

the way some of you are dragging Yoona over a casting decision she literally had no control over… please be serious. hold the people responsible for casting accountable and leave Yoona out of it.#LimYoonA https://t.co/kqgYEv2zUp

Yoona needs to add a clause in her contracts that mls opposite her should not be weirdos and rapists and she can withdraw in that case
Because this keeps happening and she is always the first one cast https://t.co/OmggvJDkAg
