The Affair Was Just the Beginning for Kim Hye-soo and Jo Yeo-jung

    by lovepark

Promotions are ramping up for Coupang Play’s black comedy The Affair Was Just the Beginning with four new character teasers and posters. Following the relationships of two couples, Kim Hye-soo (Unmasked) and Kim Ji-hoon (Dear X) get caught up in a torrent of uncontrollable secrets as their neighbors Jo Yeo-jung (Made in Korea) and Kim Jae-chul (The Perfect Crown) go through a messy divorce.

We begin with successful influencer CEO Park Kyung-hee (Kim Hye-soo) as she introduces herself as someone who has “accomplished everything.” Her channel has reached a million subscribers, she married an affectionate younger man, and they live in her dream house with their daughter Jeon Shi-hyun. However, something has gone wrong. A vulgar rumor has been circulating about her husband, and when she goes to investigate it herself, her perfect life turns upside down.

Next on the list is Ahn Soo-jung (Jo Yeo-jung), the elegant director of a dermatology clinic. When asked about her new neighbors, she regards them as strangers and says that the most she knows is that their children go to school together. Soo-jung has no intentions of mingling with those folks, and her only desire is for her daughter Min-seo — played by Do Young-seo (You and Everything Else) — to achieve everything she wants. Except, not really, since Soo-jung rips up her daughter’s sketches when she finds out that she is interested in the arts. It seems mother dearest isn’t so magnanimous after all.

Moving onto the men, we have Kyung-hee’s “key ring” husband Lim Jae-hong (Kim Ji-hoon), or as he likes to call himself, actor Cha Eun-bin. It’s okay if you have never heard of him because Jae-hong lives in his wife’s shadow, but his image as the loyal “wife guy” seems as genuine as his stage name. He claims that Soo-jung is just a neighbor — who he happened to give a ride, after he visited her clinic with another woman clinging to his arm — but just in case, he asks to keep the details a secret from Kyung-hee.

Last but not least, Joo Bo-sung (Kim Jae-chul) is a dermatologist and Soo-jung’s “husband” (if you can even call him that still). He does not live at home anymore, and when asked how his relationship is doing, he laughs it off as something everyone goes through. While he brazenly wonders what he should have done, then, it’s clear their marriage soured because of his affairs. The man can’t even be loyal to his family at his daughter’s first birthday party, so it comes as no surprise that Bo-sung takes an interest in their new neighbors, specifically Kyung-hee.

Directed by PD Lee Chang-hee (A Killer Paradox) with scripts penned by Jung Eun-kyung and Park Soo-rin, Coupang Play’s The Affair Was Just the Beginning is slated for eight episodes and premieres July 31.
