The “mood board” memes have been a K-Pop fandom staple for years.

American singer-songwriter Tinashe has finally weighed in on the well-known memes and discourse around her in K-Pop fandoms for almost a decade.

In a new interview with 66 GREENE, Tinashe was asked how much she knows about the recurring comments that she’s always “on the mood board,” particularly in the case of K-Pop artists.

How tapped into the internet are you? The discourse of ‘Tinashe is on the mood board’… Do you see it?

When we get to the K-Pop of it all-are you internalizing this, or is your energy more like, ‘If I’m going to be on the mood board, I’m going to give you something new that you can’t keep up with’?

    — Gyasi Williams Kirtley for 66 GREENE

The jokes first rose to prominence in K-Pop fandoms back in 2018, when DIA’s “Woo Woo” drew widespread accusations of plagiarizing Tinashe’s 2016 track “Superlove.”

Since then, comparisons piled up among fans, with numerous K-Pop acts labeled as Tinashe-coded over the years. Pentagon’s Kino even weighed in on the discourse back in June, revealing he “agrees” with the claim that idols look to Tinashe for inspiration.

“It’s very obvious to get influenced by her.”

I think it’s true. This generation [of idols] was training when Tinashe debuted… All of us trainees, we always watched the new Tinashe videos. I think it’s very obvious to get influenced by her.

The jokes came to a head last month, when Tinashe responded negatively to an X account that had posted photos of her captioned as being GIRLSET’s Camila.

In response to 66 GREENE, Tinashe revealed, “I am chronically online. I see it.” She explained that she feels people tend to focus on the “jokes” about K-Pop, however, rather than the larger conversation around being copied.

To be real, I think the conversation extends way further than K-Pop, and I think that’s pigeonholed it a bit, because people are kind of taking it as a joke, and it’s a dead-ass conversation at this point, honestly.

    — Tinashe

In a response that K-Pop fans are deeming truly “classy,” The star went on to say that she sees it as privilege to be inspiration for other artists

Hyolyn has also frequently been compared to Tinashe with songs like “Dally.” | Bridʒ

My overall attitude toward people copying or being inspired by me is simply that it’s a privilege to be part of the creative conversation on a bigger level — to see that kind of feedback from the universe, that your ideas are good ideas and other people are inspired by them, and those become jump-off points.

    — Tinashe
