Actress Shin So Yul previously opened up about the painful experience that pushed her into an extreme diet, ultimately leading to a dramatic 30kg (66 lbs) weight loss.
Before entering the entertainment industry, Shin So Yul revealed that she weighed around 75kg (165 lbs) and wore a size 77 (Korean sizing) during her college years. According to the actress, the turning point came during a gathering with her then-boyfriend and his friends.

During the conversation, one of his friends reportedly asked, “Shouldn’t your girlfriend lose some weight?” What hurt even more was her boyfriend’s response. He simply agreed with his friends. The hurt didn’t stop there. When another person asked, “Don’t you stop seeing her as a woman when she’s that overweight,” her boyfriend allegedly replied “she’s more like a younger sibling.”
The remarks left a lasting impact on Shin So Yul. Deeply hurt by what she heard, the actress said she immediately began an extreme diet in an attempt to lose weight. According to her account, she consumed almost nothing for more than 40 days. She revealed that when the hunger became unbearable, she would allow herself just a single raw cabbage leaf.
The drastic approach led to shocking results. Within roughly a month and a half, Shin So Yul reportedly lost nearly 30kg, dropping from a size 77 to a size 44. The transformation was so dramatic that people around her struggled to believe it.
The actress also recalled how differently people treated her afterward. She revealed that male upperclassmen who had previously paid little attention to her suddenly began buying her meals and approaching her.
While some may view the weight loss as an impressive transformation, many have focused on the heartbreaking circumstances that motivated it.
