Actress Go Ah Sung has spoken about the difficulties married actresses face in the entertainment industry, saying they can be excluded even at the casting stage.
She raised the issue on a recent YouTube program discussing challenges faced by working women in Korea.
Son Ye Jin made a successful return after marrying Hyun Bin. But that does not seem to be the case for everyone.
Go said she has not experienced this personally as she is still unmarried, but shared what she has heard from people in the industry. According to her, some actresses are rejected simply because they are married or because casting teams assume they are.
I haven’t experienced it personally since I’m still unmarried, but when I hear directly from people in the industry, there are cases where someone is cut just because they’re married or people assume, ‘Isn’t this person married?’ The bias against actresses is extremely severe.

Other guests also shared experiences about workplace bias. YouTuber Charles Enter recalled being asked during a job interview whether she had a boyfriend. After answering no, she was questioned about future relationships and children, with the interviewer making distressing comments.
I was asked whether I had a boyfriend. I said no, and the interviewer then asked something like, ‘Is there a possibility you’ll get one in the future?’ When I said no, they responded, ‘Then I guess you won’t be having children.’ It felt strange.

Multiple actresses have previously spoken about how marriage or having children can be a massive risk to their careers. Clearly, something has to change.
