A woman in her 30s has been arrested by the Korean police on suspicion of severely abusing her infant son to the point of death.
According to reports on April 30, the woman, arrested by the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police, has admitted to repeatedly hitting her eight-month-old son on the head with a TV remote on April 10. The child had to be taken to a nearby hospital in Bucheon shortly after the incident happened.
Upon inspection, doctors found that the child had sustained serious head injuries, including a skull fracture. Despite them recommending hospitalization, the mother refused to admit the injured child and took him home.
On April 13, upon finding the child unconscious, the woman took him to the same hospital again. Unfortunately, he died the following day.
As police started probing the child’s death, they found home surveillance footage showing that the parents had left the child unsupervised, alone for hours on multiple occasions. Initially, during the investigation, the mother lied to the police, saying that the child had sustained injuries after falling during a bath. She later admitted to assaulting the child, and the police placed her under emergency arrest. A preliminary autopsy also confirmed that the infant had died of head injuries.
When asked about the reason for hitting such a young child, the mother told the police that it was because he would keep crying and refuse to sleep. The father has also been questioned by the police as a witness, and the police are still determining whether he was involved in the abuse or enabled it.
The case has left the Korean public horrified, with netizens calling for strict punishment for the parents.
