A YouTuber’s actions relating to BLACKPINK‘s Jennie has caused massive backlash, prompting her to issue a statement and apology.
Recently, a YouTuber named Potato Turtle has been sharing videos of her “100 bucket list challenges,” including visiting OA Entertainment, Jennie’s agency located in Seoul, where she rang the doorbell and delivered flowers. She also gained attention by holding a sign at a concert that read, “Jennie unnie, want to have a cup of coffee?”
However, her behavior of randomly visiting the agency to find the artist drew criticism, equating it to that of “sasaeng fans” who relentlessly invade idols’ private lives. As a result, the video titled “Having a cup of coffee with Jennie” has been made private.
On the 14th, Potato Turtle posted an apology on her social media account. In the statement, she said, “I sincerely apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable because of the recent video I uploaded. I have read each comment carefully and deeply reflected on my thoughtless actions.”
She explained, “I am currently trying to complete a bucket list of 100 things. Some challenges, like ‘seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland,’ are relatively achievable, but others, like ‘having a cup of coffee with Jennie,’ are realistically difficult. I wanted to try something that seemed impossible. I wanted to knock on doors and find my own way.”
She added, “Of course, I never really thought that just by going to the agency or attending a concert, I would actually get to have coffee with Jennie. I often refer to overseas content when making videos. Since there are often shout-out videos to celebrities abroad, I made the video with the sincere intention of expressing my feelings.”
Regarding her visit to Jennie’s agency, Potato Turtle said, “I did not realize that abruptly showing up and delivering a letter and bouquet could be seen as stalking behavior. I wanted to convey my sincerity by giving the letter and filming the process, but the method was wrong. I think I was too ignorant about idol fan culture. I will act more carefully going forward.”
She also apologized for holding up a sign during the concert, saying, “Since it was my first time attending a concert, I lacked understanding of concert culture. I sincerely apologize for holding up the sign at the venue. From now on, I will adhere to concert etiquette and not repeat such mistakes.”
