I’m not looking out for new Infinite music with the ferocity I once was, so I didn’t even realize it’s been such a long time since leader Kim Sung Kyu released a new album. It’s been almost three years, and last month’s pre-release Over It re-introduced his rock side under new label Billions. That sound does not continue on title track When I Think About You (널 떠올리면), which casts him as a sentimental balladeer.
This is one of the tracks on the new album that reunites Sung Kyu with Nell frontman/producer Jongwan, who has crafted his best solo work up to this point. To me, they’re a match made in heaven and that symbiosis salvages the otherwise boring When I Think About You. Sung Kyu’s voice fits perfectly over Jongwan’s melodies, lending the track a hyper-emotional, pleading quality. It’s truly a case of the singer making the song.
With that said, I’m not impressed with this song. The production’s way too muted, the melodies are way too reptitive and the track just doesn’t go anywhere. It’s rare for such a strong collaboration to result in such a dull song, but I struggle to believe Sung Kyu couldn’t come up with something better than this. It’s always nice to hear his voice. There are much better places to hear it.
