Reasons to watch: MBC’s new thriller, A Bona Fide Killer follows a working mom trying to find the perfect work-life balance while evading the law. Adapted from a popular web comic by the same title, Gong Hyo-jin headlines with Jung Joon-won, Lee Sang-yi, and Sung Dong-il joining her to round out the cast.
Gong Hyo-jin seems like your everyday working mom; she holds down the fort while working two jobs, and she and her husband (Jung Joon-won) are doing their best to create a happy home for their daughter. But unlike other moms, Gong has an unusual second job, one that takes her from home and also puts her in danger. By day, she’s Mom, but by night, she’s the Kingfisher, an infamous vigilante sharpshooter. As part of a vigilante crew led by Sung Dong-il, her team goes after the bad guys who manage to wriggle out of the justice system’s grasp.
When the drama opens, it’s actually Gong’s first time back since she’s had her child, and she takes out her target in a risky daytime operation. That first post-hiatus mission puts her on the radar of every journalist and cop worth their salt. Unfortunately, that includes her husband, a dogged reporter, as well as her husband’s best friend, Lee Sang-yi, who is a detective with the Major Crimes Unit. In order to protect the new life she’s built, Gong finds herself walking a tightrope. As she dodges everyone on her trail, she must complete her missions undetected or risk seeing her life and family shatter.
Deadliest side hustle ever? It looks like we can expect a cat and mouse game with Gong Hyo-jin trying to stay a step ahead of everyone. It reminds me a bit of a gender-reversed Flowers of Evil, but with heavier notes of domestic drama and possibly some dark humor mixed in.
