Reasons to watch: Coupang Play’s new black comedy thriller, The Affair Was Just the Beginning, stars Kim Hye-soo, with Kim Ji-hoon, Jo Yeo-jung, and Kim Jae-chul joining her in the main cast.
The drama title borrows from our leading lady’s viewpoint, as it’s the perfect summation of her thoughts once she uncovers a terrible, murder-adjacent, secret about her loved ones. It comes just as she’s reached a point in her life when she felt she had made her dreams come true.
Though at the start of the drama, she’s a successful entrepreneur (with a huge online following to boot), she spent years dragging herself and her good-for-nothing husband out of poverty by building her business from the ground up. Thanks to her business savvy, they were able to afford her dream home in a ritzy neighborhood.
But that dream is more nightmare, and her recently divorced neighbors, Jo Yeo-jung and Kim Jae-chul, begin to intrude on her peace with Jo Yeo-jung in particular setting Kim Hye-soo into a spiral of doubt and suspicion regarding Kim Ji-hoon’s faithfulness. One night, she follows her husband but she ends up uncovering a secret that’s worse than any affair. In the aftermath of The Secret, Kim Hye-soo off on another quest, this time to track down a blackmailer who has the power to destroy the life Kim has so carefully built.
I would watch Kim Hye-soo in anything, and her pairing with Kim Ji-hoon is making me irrationally hopeful for a drama that can recapture the sexy energy of Hyena, and maybe even some of the riveting messiness from A Couple’s World. Even if it doesn’t quite reach those heights, I think we can expect an entertaining mystery that will leave us questioning everyone’s motivations and desires.
