Horrifying footage of a caregiver’s harsh handling of a newborn baby has left Korean netizens outraged.

The video, captured on a home security camera last October, showed an older caregiver slapping a newborn on the cheek repeatedly and violently shaking them from side to side. The baby’s head was left lolling around helplessly.

The incident, which occurred in Daegu, had previously been reported by local media. However, the clip resurfacing on the internet has drawn renewed attention. Reports identified the baby as a one-month-old. According to the parents, the caregiver showed no remorse despite being caught and defended herself, arguing that her actions might have come across as harsh because she was from Gyeongsang Province.

The footage gaining public attention again was not a mere coincidence. The parents decided to make it public again after learning that the woman in the video had hired a lawyer without offering any apology to the family. They accused the caregiver of lying and trying to evade the law. In the post, they explained that the woman was a professional caregiver in her 60s with ten years of experience in caring for infants. She previously worked as a kindergarten teacher and also has a government-issued certification.

This incident has sparked strong reactions from netizens who found the footage too painful to watch. The issue has also led many to demand better standards for children’s caregivers in Korea. Interestingly, the country doesn’t require caregivers for babies to hold a national license, unlike caregivers for the elderly. Hence, most professionals usually complete private training programs and get hired through agencies. But such incidents continue to underline the importance of better regulation in this job.
