Netflix variety show Jae-seok’s B&B Rules! held a production presentation a week before its release, raising anticipation by introducing the show and sharing various stories.
Jae-seok’s B&B Rules! is a group camping variety show where rookie camp leader Yoo Jae Suk and the unpredictable staff members Lee Kwang Soo, Byeon Woo Seok, and Ji Ye Eun interact with guests by chatting, playing, and goofing around to create an escape from daily life. Following the wildly popular quirky guesthouse variety Kian’s Bizarre B&B, this new “guesthouse variety show” from Netflix produced by PD Jung Hyo Min’s team is attracting attention.
As Yoo Jae Suk, Lee Kwang Soo, Byeon Woo Seok, and Ji Ye Eun welcome the guests, some viewers reacted with a “Again?” after the cast was announced. It was pointed out that Yoo Jae Suk has long worked closely with PD Jung Hyo Min, starting as an assistant producer on Two Yoo Project – Sugar Man, then continuing with Laborhood on Hire, Korea No. 1, and now Jae-seok’s B&B Rules!, spanning four shows together, raising criticism about it being a “network variety show.”
Additionally, the fact that the team with Yoo Jae Suk consists of Lee Kwang Soo, Byeon Woo Seok, and Ji Ye Eun was also criticized. Byeon Woo Seok is considered an exception as he is rarely seen in variety shows. However, Lee Kwang Soo and Ji Ye Eun have collaborated with Yoo Jae Suk on Running Man, “Busted!,” The Zone: Survival Mission, and Korea No. 1, leading to further comments that this is just another “network variety show.”
Recently, the variety show industry has been criticized for recycling familiar combinations with only format changes, earning the label “network variety shows.” While viewers initially found these combinations fresh, repeated appearances across multiple shows make it hard to avoid a sense of déjà vu. There is concern that scenes born from their personal connections can feel uncomfortable, and even when new members are introduced to add freshness, they often fail to blend smoothly, creating a sense of discord.
As the industry continues to opt for the safe choice of proven chemistry over new attempts and challenges with fresh combinations, viewers hoping to discover new faces and characters express considerable disappointment.
For these reasons, Jae-seok’s B&B Rules! was also accused of being a network variety show. Yoo Jae Suk responded directly. He described PD Jung Hyo Min as “someone I have worked with for about 15 years who, regardless of our personal relationship, has successfully produced numerous programs.” He emphasized, “We don’t cast people because of my personal network; we cast people necessary for the program.”
He added, “When offered a role on a show, I carefully consider whether I can really do well and only decide to participate after serious thought. Some may see this as a network-based cast, but we have our own considerations and decisions. Both the production team and the cast constantly think about ‘Is there something new?’ and ‘Is there something fresh?’ We believe it is our job to continuously create a balance of freshness and fun.”
PD Jung Hyo Min addressed the criticism of “network variety,” saying, “Repeating the same thing won’t win over viewers. When Yoo Jae Suk did guesthouse variety shows, I was confident it would create a unique flavor different from existing shows. We have worked hard over the past year to realize that, and we hope people will watch and judge.”
