Doctor Shin transplants a mother’s brain into her comatose daughter

    by solstices

In its first teaser, TV Chosun’s upcoming drama Doctor Shin reveals the brewing tension between a genius surgeon and a woman whose brain falls to ruin overnight. But if you thought this would be a cerebral medical thriller, think again, because scriptwriter Im Sung-han’s reputation precedes her – brace yourself for tangled relationships and makjang theatrics.

“I heard you can perform a brain transplant?” asks a woman in voiceover. The surgeon answers in the affirmative, but points out that a donor is required. That’s when the woman volunteers herself without hesitation, and we see both her and another woman being prepped for surgery.

As it turns out, the other woman is the top star Momo, played by newcomer Baek Seo-ra. A famous actress beloved by all, Momo was basking in the peak of her popularity when a sudden accident left her in a comatose state. With her body intact but her brain irrevocably damaged, it seemed impossible for Momo to return – until the brain transplant.

Before the tragic accident, Momo had been preparing to walk down the wedding aisle with the genius doctor Shin Joo-shin, played by Jung Yi-chan (Love Song For Illusion). Like his name suggests, his inimitable neurosurgery skills – surpassing even that of his father’s – might as well have been bestowed by the gods above. With that, Joo-shin pulls off the impossible, transplanting the brain of an older woman who craves youth into Momo’s comatose body. And who else would the owner of that brain be but Song Ji-in (Concrete Market) as Momo’s mother Hyun Ran-hee.

Resurrected from death’s door, Momo begins life anew – but is this new being Momo, or Ran-hee? As for Joo-shin, it seems his attention may have shifted to Joo Se-bin (The Empire) as Geum Ba-ra, a culture journalist. “It seems we understand each other well,” Joo-shin remarks, implying a deeper connection. “I’ve missed you, oppa,” replies a wistful Ba-ra, tucked in Joo-shin’s embrace. Interestingly, Ba-ra hails from the orphanage run by the Nua Foundation, which Joo-shin just so happens to be the chairman of. Coincidence, or part of a greater scheme?

Further complicating matters is Ahn Woo-yeon (I Dol I) as the game developer Ha Yong-joong, who is Joo-shin’s friend – and by the looks of it, Ran-hee’s lover. Faced with a reborn Ran-hee in Momo’s body, Yong-joong can’t help but be drawn to her. Even though – or perhaps especially since – Ran-hee’s face keeps surfacing in his mind’s eye when he looks at Momo. But who is it that Yong-joong truly loves? Is it even possible to distinguish the two women from each other, now that they’ve been fused into a single being? Maybe it doesn’t quite matter to Yong-joong. “You have to stay by my side forever,” he declares.

Directed by Lee Seung-hoon (Love ft. Marriage & Divorce) with scripts by Im Sung-han (Durian’s Affair), Doctor Shin is slated to premiere on March 14.
