A beloved Korean actress shared her experience of being pressured to lose extreme weight in the past and her thoughts on the current trend of the “skinny to the bone” look.
On the 11th, a video titled “Taking a Break from Daily Life, in Bali. All-Inclusive Resort Vlog” was released on YouTube. In the video, actress Lee Yu Bi answered fans’ questions while having breakfast at her accommodation in Bali. She explained that she is sensitive to facial bloating because it became a habit to constantly check for it since her twenties. She said, “Back then, just having my face appear on screen was stressful.”
She also mentioned the pressure she faced regarding dieting in the past. Lee Yu Bi recalled, “Someone once told me, ‘Yu Bi, you need to lose some weight, your face looks too round.’ At that time, I weighed about 42kg.” She remembered, “The next day, I had a scene where I had to take off my clothes, and a staff member who saw my arms apologized to me and told me not to lose any more weight.” Due to facial bloating, she was misjudged as having a different body shape than she actually did.
She added her own experience regarding the cause of bloating. Lee Yu Bi said, “The swelling started to lessen in my thirties when I began exercising. It turns out it was not about fat, but circulation issues.” She explained that her constitution causes her face to swell easily when her condition worsens. She emphasized, “The important thing is to eat well, sleep well, and not be stressed.” She pointed to sleep and stress management as the core of health care.
Regarding the recent trends in beauty standards, Lee Yu Bi stated, “Nowadays, it seems everyone is aiming for the ‘skinny to the bone’ look. Ironically, my old body shape might fit the current trend, but personally, I don’t like it.” She added, “I think a slightly fuller look like now appears much healthier and more beautiful. Letting go a little brings more happiness. When you’re happy, you look prettier. I hope people don’t obsess too much over dieting.”
