Step inside ZELO’s world as he talks identity, artistry, and the experiences that shaped his comeback.

From his early beginnings as the youngest member of B.A.P to carving out his own lane as a solo artist, ZELO has consistently evolved with intention. Debuting in 2012 with a powerful presence that blended sharp rap delivery and dynamic performance, he quickly became known not only for his technical skill but for the depth he brought to his artistry at such a young age. When he officially stepped into his solo career with his 2019 mini album Distance, it marked the beginning of a more personal, self-directed chapter—one where he could fully explore his voice as a songwriter, composer, and producer.

Now, following the completion of his mandatory military service, ZELO returns with renewed perspective and creative energy. His latest pre-release single, “Cola Comigo,” feels like both an invitation and a statement—welcoming listeners into this next phase while showcasing a refined sound shaped by time, growth, and experience. Paired with engaging choreography and a wave of dance challenges, the track highlights his continued passion for performance while embracing a more relaxed, confident presence.

In this exclusive interview with Hellokpop, ZELO reflects on the journey that brought him here, the meaning behind “Cola Comigo,” and the creative direction guiding his next chapter. From reconnecting with fans on stage to collaborating across the industry, he shares insight into his evolution as an artist and what lies ahead.

HELLOKPOP: Hello ZELO! Thanks for taking the time to chat with Hellokpop. To start, could you introduce yourself to our readers?

ZELO: Hello, this is ZELO. It’s been a while since I’ve greeted everyone like this, so I’m really glad to be here. I’m excited to share my music and story with you again.

“Cola Comigo” marks your first release post-military service. What emotions or thoughts shaped this song, and why did it feel like the right track to reintroduce yourself?

HKP: ZELO: During my military service, I had a lot of time to reflect and organize my thoughts and emotions, and this song came out naturally through that process. “Cola Comigo” has a light yet atmospheric mood, and I wanted to kick off my return by showing a side of me that fans enjoy—especially my dancing. I also felt it was the right track to introduce my evolved musical direction and sensibility.

HKP: The title “Cola Comigo” has a warm, inviting feel. What message or story did you want listeners to take away from the song?

ZELO: Rather than delivering a heavy message, I wanted to share a feeling and atmosphere that naturally blends in with the listener’s emotions. I hope it becomes a song that people can comfortably enjoy in their own moments.

HKP: As a songwriter and producer, how did your creative process evolve while working on this track compared to your previous releases?

ZELO: I think I’ve become more honest with my own taste and emotions than before. I focus more on the process rather than just the result, paying closer attention to every detail in the sound. Also, I’ve been trying to communicate with more global fans through English lyrics, and this time I experimented by incorporating rhythms from Latin music I personally enjoy, layering them with Portuguese. I think that gives the track a more refined and sensual feel. I hope you enjoy it.

HKP: The choreography and dance challenges for “Cola Comigo” have been a big part of its rollout. How did you approach creating a performance that feels both personal and widely shareable?

ZELO: At first, I didn’t have the challenge in mind. I created the choreography based purely on the flow and mood of the song. But after seeing many artists connect with audiences through dance challenges, I decided to revisit the format and create several versions. I know it’s important to make something easy for anyone to follow, but I did feel a bit shy about it at first (laughs). Still, I think leaving that content behind is meaningful in showing who I am as an artist. I’ll keep coming back with better music and performances, so please look forward to an even easier challenge next time.

HKP: You’ve collaborated with various artists and idols on the dance challenge—what have those interactions been like, and is there a moment that stood out to you?

ZELO: Since everyone has their own unique style, it was interesting to see how the same choreography could be expressed differently. The whole process was enjoyable, and it felt like the music naturally expanded through it. I was also really happy that the challenge allowed me to introduce myself to new audiences through other artists’ fans.

HKP: Your recent fan concert, “COMIGO: NEXT CHAPTER,” felt especially meaningful to fans, especially with the appearance of your former B.A.P members. What did that moment mean to you personally?

ZELO: It was a very special moment for me as well. I could feel that some relationships and energies don’t change over time, and it meant a lot to share that moment together with the fans.

HKP: Looking back on your journey from your debut with B.A.P to your solo career now, what do you feel has changed the most about you as an artist? And what do you feel has stayed the same at your core?

ZELO: In my teenage years, I did my best to express what I wanted within the roles that were given to me. Now, the biggest difference is that I’m creating my own direction. However, my sincerity toward music and my passion for the stage have never changed.

HKP: As someone deeply involved in songwriting and production, what inspires you most these days when you sit down to create music?

ZELO: I think I get the most inspiration from everyday emotions and moments. Nothing too extraordinary, just the natural feelings I experience often turn into music.

HKP: With “Cola Comigo” being a pre-release single, how does it set the tone for what’s coming next in this era?

ZELO: I see it as a starting point that lightly introduces the direction I’m heading in. I plan to continue showing a wider range of styles and deeper music moving forward, so please look forward to it.

HKP: Is there a side of yourself—musically or personally—that you’re especially excited to show in your upcoming projects?

ZELO: Musically, I want to explore more free and refined sounds, such as trap soul and EDM pop. Personally, I want to focus on establishing a clear identity so the public can recognize what kind of artist I am.

HKP: For fans who may be discovering you for the first time through this release, what’s one thing you hope they understand about you as an artist?

ZELO: I’m not just an artist who delivers music as a final product. I actively participate in visuals and performance as well, communicating with the audience through music as a multi-entertainer. I want to continue showing those aspects and naturally share my journey of growth and evolution as an artist.

HKP: Lastly, please share a message for your fans around the world who have been waiting for your return.

ZELO: Thank you sincerely for waiting for me for so long. I’ll make sure that your patience was worth it by coming back with even better music and performances.
