HYBE girl group ILLIT has gotten entangled in a serious allegation of referring to a violent criminal in their new song.

On October 26, KST, the girl group released its fifth mini album, BREAK EVEN. The title track, “You’re Under Arrest,” is an electro-pop track that had already gotten caught up with enough controversies with its teasers alone. Now, with the song’s full release, a new issue has taken social media by storm.
The song’s pre-chorus begins with the line “Read him his rights, I got a lot of questions,” and this very line is at the center of the supposed controversy. The official English translation differs a little from the actual Korean lyrics, which say, “Call Miranda, I’ve got a lot to ask.” This term, “Miranda,” is the root of a serious allegation being made by some netizens.

Several posts on X (formerly Twitter) have claimed that ILLIT’s song is referring to Ernesto Miranda, a violent criminal who was convicted of kidnapping, rape, and armed robbery charges, and questioned the thought process behind such a gaffe.
Illit in their new song mentioned Ernesto Miranda is a rapist who raped a minor

Has BELIFT LAB lost its mind? Miranda is a rapist who raped a minor!

Fans, baffled by this particular interpretation, have pointed out that the “Miranda” in question is clearly referring to the Miranda rights or Miranda warning, which are a set of constitutional rights that the police have to customarily read to suspects while taking them into custody. These rights were named after the US Supreme Court’s 1966 ruling in the Miranda v. Arizona case, where Ernesto Miranda’s conviction was overturned because he was not informed of his right to remain silent and seek legal counsel before he was questioned by the police.
the song is called “you’re under arrest” and when u heard miranda u thought of a rapist instead of the MIRANDA RIGHTS a police officer reads when arresting someone?? 😭 https://t.co/FZxxJWluSF

thinking about your brain going to a random rapist instead of the miranda rights that legally have to be read to ANYONE under arrest https://t.co/6ooTfuvJbA

Are you dead serious😭 It says 미란다를 불러 which means reading someone their Miranda rights and ur the one making it sound weird bc how is that “mentioning” 😫 https://t.co/KrllDL0FYn pic.twitter.com/Xr37kmlZcJ

“reading him his mirandas” are you genuinely this stupid https://t.co/S26e2mVvha

Despite this explanation, some pushed back, arguing that the way the original lyrics were written was problematic.
님은 조두순의 법칙이 있는데 아일릿이 조두순을 불러봐 이러면 좋아요..?아까는 미란다의 법칙을 모르냐면서요.. 지금 아일릿이 범죄자 샤라웃한게 됐잖아요.하

If there’s something called the “Cho Doo Soon Law,” do you really think it’s okay for ILLIT to say “Call Cho Doo Soon?” Just a moment ago, you were asking if people didn’t know about the “Miranda Rights,” right? Well, now they’ve effectively made it look like ILLIT is giving a shout-out to a criminal. Good grief.

They really shouldn’t have had a young girl sing those lines without even knowing what they meant. I genuinely like ILLIT, but I just don’t understand how anyone can defend this—especially since Minju didn’t even write those lyrics herself.

However, these arguments were met with fierce backlash, ridicule, and, in general, disdain.
