An upcoming historical fantasy series has just added one more problem to its growing list.
After weeks of speculation, Chinese media reports now claim that He Yu, a popular rising star, will no longer act opposite Esther Yu in iQIYI’s upcoming adaptation of Immortal Flesh, a C-Drama that is rumored to have changed its name to Longing for You. Based on Yi Du Jun Hua’s novel Immortal Flesh, the series blends fantasy and romance with darker themes exploring human nature, greed, temptation, and the spirit world.

He Yu had reportedly been lined up to portray Rong Chenzi, although his casting was never officially announced. According to circulating rumours, the actor ultimately withdrew because of scheduling issues as well as growing online pressure tied to fan tensions surrounding both him and Esther Yu.
The production itself has also reportedly encountered several behind-the-scenes problems beyond the casting uncertainty. Rumors of filming postponements have circulated on Chinese social media, while discussions about potential script revisions and toned-down elements from the original novel have caused concern among longtime readers.
Many fans reportedly consider the novel’s darker tone and distinctive mythology to be central to its appeal; major changes could weaken what made the source material stand out. In addition to this, some rumors claim that the production might use AI-generated supporting characters, leading to more controversy.
Even so, anticipation for the C-Drama reportedly remains high. Esther Yu recently hinted that she would soon begin filming a new costume series after returning to China, prompting speculation that preparations for production may now be entering their final stages.
