Premiere Watch: Teach You a Lesson
by stroopwafel
Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Action, comedy, crime, thriller
Episode count: 10
Reasons to watch: It may be summer, but school is still in session for a whole slew of miscreants in the new Netflix series, Teach You a Lesson. The drama features Kim Mu-yeol, Lee Sung-min, Jin Ki-joo, and Pyo Ji-hoon as purveyors of justice in situations where bad grades are the least of anyone’s worries.
Adapted from a webtoon, the drama focuses on a special task force that’s brought into existence by Education Minister, Lee Sung-min. In a time when order is weakening and students seem to be misbehaving at unprecedented levels, Lee calls on Kim Mu-yeol to lead fellow inspectors, Jin and Pyo, into the worst schools and bring back discipline by any means necessary. After all, what use is detention when students are doing things like starting gangs and doing drugs?
Where Kim differs from most teachers and people at the Ministry of Education is that he’s as willing to use his words as his fists. Whether he’s facing off against violent students, helicopter parents, or smarmy politicians, his only aim is to stand on the side of the victim.
If you’re looking for an action-packed story that will bring elements of thriller and comedy into play, give Teach You a Lesson a try. Though I’ve been getting a bit of webtoon adaptation fatigue lately, (and I haven’t heard great things about the source material), I’m putting all of my trust into this cast and the screenwriter, Lee Nam-kyu, to bring depth and heart to this drama.
